Escape plot fails at Alton jail
ALTON - Two city jail inmates whose attempted getaway through an air conditioning duct this weekend landed them in the police chief's office were charged Monday with escaping custody.
One of the men hoisted his cellmate up to the ceiling, where he managed to open a vent and crawl inside just before 3 a.m. Saturday.
But the man didn't make it far, Alton Police Chief Baldemar Flores said. His weight caused the duct to collapse, dumping him 8 feet into the chief's office.
Police found the other man trying to reach the cell's vent moments later.
I guess it's safe to assume that a low bail is out of the question at this point.
