TRICK OR TREAT

MARCHING ORDERS

Late last week, I received word of my deployment destination. It appears I am being sent to a location in the continental United States*. Not Iraq. Not Afghanistan. Not even Europe. Oh well, you go where thet send you. It's all part of the gig when you raise your right hand and sign on the dotted line--something I've done four times in the past 21 years.

I'll be leaving sometime within the next week. To be honest, I don't even know what day I'm flying out on. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Gotta love the short notice.

It sounds like I may not have internet access where I'll be staying. That being the case, posting may get even lighter than usual here. Hopefully I'll be able to find a solution, but it's not a top priority at the moment.

*I won't sat where, exactly. But I will say this much, if you were looking at a map of the US, my destination would be near the left-hand side. Unless you're holding the map upside down.

TODAY IN CRIME HISTORY: OCTOBER 26, 1881

I can't believe I almost let this one slip by me. Thankfully, RT, who is guest blogging over at SYLG, reminded me with this post. Thanks, RT.

Anyway, today is the anniversary of the infamous gunfight at the OK Corral. If you're so inclined, you can read what I had to say about the shootout in last year's post on the subject.

If last year's commentary won't do it for you, how about this year's pictures? It just so happens that I went to Tombstone last month (twice, in fact; because once just wasn't enough). Here are a few of the pictures I took (click to gigantify):

This is Allen Street, the main drag of old Tombstone.

This is where it all happened. It's what used to be a lot adjacent to the OK Corral.

This is the Black Moriah. It was the hearse that was used to carry the "dearly departed" to Boot Hill.

And speaking of Boot Hill, here's the final resting place of Billy Clanton and the McClaury brothers.

No Boot Hill picture collection would be complete with a photo of the tombstone of Lester Moore.

BABE OF THE WEEK

This week's babe is Sarah Lancaster, who plays Chuck's sister on the TV series Chuck (which is a pretty cool show, by the way).

HURRY UP AND WAIT

I've been somewhat preoccupied lately, hence the lighter-than-usual posting. Here's the short version:

I got called to active duty by the Air Guard in August. I spent most of August and September training for deployment. I came home for a week at the end of September, and was slated for another school in early October. A few days before I was scheduled to leave for training, I got the word that my original deployment was cancelled. My orders: stand by to stand by. I remain on active duty at home station until the military, in its infinite wisdom, finds another tasking for me.

Needless to say, they still haven't found a place for me. So here I sit, waiting for word. And the waiting is driving me frickin' crazy. While I'd prefer a deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan, at this point, I'm not too picky about where they send me, just so long as they send me somewhere. Patience isn't my strong point.

ADVICE FOR TEENS

I saw this on a bumper sticker at Walmart:
TEENAGERS,
If you are tired of being hassled by unreasonable parents...
NOW IS THE TIME FOR ACTION!!!
Leave home and pay your own way while you still know everything.

A MAJOR BLOG MILESTONE

No, it's not my one millionth hit. That'd require each of my regular readers to visit this blog 200,000 times, and that's too much to ask. Especially for a blog that is sorely lacking in new content these days. No, today's milestone is that Nobody Move! is now the #2 result on Google in a search for dangers of pork meat. So, there you have it. This blog is now officially kosher.

MY LIFE IS WAY TOO COMPLICATED

Nothing's ever as easy as it ought to be.
